What is restorative dentistry?

Restorative dentistry are procedures that are meant to replace missing or damaged teeth. The best restorative dentists in Chester restore the function and integrity of the tooth while maintaining its natural look.

If You’re Missing One or More Teeth

There are a number of ways to replace missing teeth. When you set up your consultation, you’ll be able to discuss your options with Dr. Felton.

The following are common procedures performed in our office. However, dental implants may be preferred by some since they look and function most like your natural teeth and don’t require special care:

  • Fixed Bridges – These time-tested appliances will replace one or more missing teeth and help you eat, smile, and talk comfortably again.
  • Dentures – Enjoy a full or partial arch of great-fitting new replacement teeth.
  • Dental Implants – These artificial tooth roots will replace your missing teeth and provide a base for implant-anchored restorations using crowns, bridges, dentures, or full arches of teeth.

If Your Teeth Are Damaged

Your teeth can become damaged over time, and dental crowns can help reshape, resize, or strengthen them to improve their appearance. The crown is a cap that looks like a tooth and fits over your natural tooth and then cemented into place.

  • Porcelain Crowns – Custom crowns fit snugly over damaged teeth to repair and strengthen them. They will blend in naturally with your other teeth, as they can be color-matched. Porcelain is an especially good option if you have a metal allergy. Crowns restore virtually all your chewing power.
  • Inlays and Onlays – When a crown isn’t needed, we can use custom porcelain restorations for a mid-level repair. An inlay is needed when a filling is too small to fill a cavity, and an onlay is for repairs that are too big for an inlay and too small for a crown.
  • Dental Veneers – Dental veneers are also for damaged teeth, but cover just the front of the tooth, whereas a crown covers the entire tooth. In just two office visits, these wafer-like shells, made of porcelain or other materials, will strengthen and conceal damaged teeth, creating a durable and gorgeous new smile you’ll be proud of.

If You Are Experiencing Tooth Pain

If you have a toothache or your teeth are sensitive to hot or cold, pressure, or sweet foods, you may have a cavity and need a filling. This is the most common way to resolve decay that has penetrated the enamel of your tooth.

  • Tooth Fillings – After the dentist has removed the decayed part of the tooth that was causing you pain, he will fill it. We have several materials to use for your filling, including tooth-colored composite, gold, and silver. Your dentist will work with you to decide the best type for your situation.
  • Root Canal Therapy – If you are experiencing pain, it could mean you have damaged or infected tooth pulp that needs to be removed. Don’t discount this misunderstood treatment! We can stop your toothache and save your tooth with a root canal. After a root canal, you may need a crown put on your tooth.

How To Care for Your Teeth After a Restorative Dentistry Procedure in Our Chester, VA Office

Root canal therapy should solve the problem that caused your tooth pain. However, in some cases, you may need to have the tooth retreated. It’s important to keep your teeth and gums healthy by brushing and flossing, as well as getting regular dental exams & cleanings.

Although crowns should last a lifetime, it’s possible the cement could become loose and cause the crown to come out. If this happens, you can sometimes temporarily put it back on with denture glue or toothpaste, but contact our office immediately to come in to have it reattached with permanent cement. To help avoid losing a crown, be sure to maintain good oral hygiene and stay away from hard foods that might be damaging.

With any restorative dentistry, you will want to make sure to brush your teeth twice a day, preferably with an electric toothbrush that can better remove plaque. Also, make sure to floss around dental implants, crowns, and brides at least once per day. Avoid any foods that might cause damage to restorative work.
