Well, I knew early on that I wanted to do something in the medical field. So I took a lot of biology type courses. I really thought I might enjoy going into medicine.
I went to school down in Texas at Baylor University and had an opportunity to volunteer in a periodontal clinic in a nearby army facility. Once I started volunteering and assisting in periodontal surgery, it was kind of all over for me. I pretty much knew that it was the right combination of working with individual patients and exercising a skill that really felt very natural to me.
In order to stay on a cutting edge, I'm involved in some continuing education courses that meet once a month. These might be groups of general dentists that are being taught by specialists, as an example.
So the courses that are offered from time to time are very important. The courses that teach you specific skills are very important. But also the courses that give you hands-on experience with colleagues in formats where you can actively learn, you can ask questions, you can do case presentations, you can hear others doing their case presentations, hear what has worked well for them.
There is always something that is being developed that is better for my patients. And if I don't offer that better thing to the patients then I'm really not fulfilling my professional responsibility. So when you come into my office and you need a crown, for an example, it needs to be the very newest material. If you needed to have an implant, it needs to be a very modern system. For an example, implants ... the systems are developing all of the time. Within the last two months, I've added a whole new system to our office.
So it's my responsibility to seek out what is the current best thing for you. And then when you come in, I have to be confident to offer it to you.
Dr. Walter Felton started his own dental practice so he could create the unique work environment he wanted. He says, “I really care that dentistry is done correctly, whether we do it by ourselves, or we include the very best specialists. I will do things the right way.”
